WHO IS BEST PLACED TO EVALUATE AN AIRLINE? THE ANSWER, OF COURSE, IS ITS PASSENGERS. HOWEVER, BRITAIN PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE TOO. BUT WHY?! A BRITISH COMPANY CALLED SKYTRAX IS THE NUMBER ONE PROVIDER OF STUDIES INTO THE QUALITY OF SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE WORLD AIRLINES.
Skytrax, established in 1989, is an influential company evaluating and advising upon the air transport industry. The company takes regular surveys and provides analytical information about the services of more than 210 airlines and 65 airports in the world. Skytrax rating based on passengers’ reviews affects both the image of a particular airline and the development of the air industry in general. Airlines do their best to improve their services to gain passengers’ trust and to win this aviation equivalent of an “Oscar”. Each year only ten airlines are awarded the top status and receive Skytrax World Airline Awards. Skytrax uses five-star rating to evaluate airline product and service standards. Airlines and airports with fewer than two stars indicate poor quality of service; three-star airports and airlines are satisfactory. Four stars indicate good quality of service, while five stars indicate excellence. Only six airlines and three airports of the world can be rated at five-star level at the same time.
Respondents (about 18 million people around the world) vote for the best airline. Passengers’ evaluation is based on a number of criteria, including:
• Airline website, including the availability of the presentation of information, ease of online booking of tickets, the possibility of obtaining a boarding pass via the Internet and other online services
• Speed and efficiency of check-in and boarding procedures
• State registration, the cabin cleanliness
• Entertainment on board
• Crew: uniform, attitude towards passengers, work efficiency
• Quality of in-flight catering
• Comfortness of seats
• Other criteria
The survey is conducted annually, and the results can be found on the official website of the company. The following table shows the best airlines by Skytrax of the last 10 years
It is interesting that not European companies, but rather representatives of generous East and hospitable Asia are often ranked the best. Among the most successful airlines of Kazakhstan in Skytrax rating is Air Astana. The airline was the first in the CIS which received international recognition and a solid four star status. In addition, “Air Astana” has repeatedly received the Skytrax World AirlineAwards Prize in the category “Best Airline in Central Asia and India.” Kazakhstanis can experience the luxury of travelling with a fivestar airline too. Asiana Airlines flies directly from Seoul to Almaty and Astana – the same one that appears over and over again at Skytrax rating. Learn more about the five-star Asiana Airline here.
