This list is made on the basis of March 2016 passenger traffic data provided by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

1 HARTSFIELD-JACKSON ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ATLANTA

(the USA) – 4,336,306 people.
Also known as Atlanta airport, this airport is located 11 km south of the central business district of Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It was opened in 1926. Atlanta airport is the busiest world airport in terms of passenger traffic and aircraft movements (take-offs and landings). There are 196 exits and it has its own underground station.

2 BEIJING CAPITAL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, BEIJING

(PRC) – 3,862,157 people.
This is the largest airport in China and the world’s second busiest airport by number of passengers. The airport is located 20 km northeast of Beijing’s city centre. Opened in 1958, it became the first airport in China. It also has a transport connection with Beijing subway.

3 DUBAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

(the UAE) – 3,618,753 people.
This is the largest civil airport of the United Arab Emirates located 4 km southeast of the historical centre of Dubai in Al Garhoud district. The airport was opened in 1960. It has own underground stations in several terminals.

4 TOKYO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

(Japan) – 3,360,973 people.
Also called Haneda Airport, it is one of the two largest airports serving the Greater Tokyo area. The airport is located in the special district of Ota, Tokyo, Japan. It was opened in 1930 and has a station of Tokyo Monorail and a railway station.

5 LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

(the USA) – 3,328,127 people.
This is the main airport of Los Angeles, California. The airport is located 27 km from the centre of the city. It was opened in 1928 and has nine passenger terminals. The total area of the airport is 14 sq. km.

6 CHICAGO O’HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

( theUSA) – 3,178,469 people.
Also known as Chicago O’Hare or simply O’Hare. It is the largest airport located in the north-west part of Chicago, Illinois, the USA, at the distance of 27 km north-west of Chicago Loop. It was built in 1942 and was initially used as a manufacturing plant for Douglas C-54 military transport planes. In 1945 it started to operate as an airport.

7 LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT

( the UK) – 3,051,603 people.
This is the largest international airport in London. It is considered to be the busiest airport in Europe. The airport is located 24 km west of the city centre. It was opened in 1929 and used to be a military airport. Nowadays it has four passenger terminals and a cargo terminal. The 5th terminal was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on March 14, 2008.

8 HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

(PRC) – 2,995,000 people.
It is located on the island of Chek Lap Kok, and is also colloquially known as Chek Lap Kok Airport, to distinguish it from the old Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport. It was opened in 1998 and nowadays it is an important regional trans-shipment centre, passenger hub and gateway for destinations in Mainland China and South-East Asia. Despite a relatively short history, this airport has won several international awards as the best airport of the world.

9 DALLAS-FORT WORTH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

(theUSA) – 2,705,572 people.
Located between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, the USA, this airport was opened in 1973. The total area is 7317 ha. It is the second largest airport in the USA (after Denver International Airport) and the fourth largest airport in the world.

10 SHANGHAI PUDONG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

(PRC) – 2,673,636 people.
The new Shanghai (China) airport is located in the eastern part of Pudong district. It was opened in 1999 and has two terminals. It is the largest cargo hub. The airport is also connected to the Maglev railway line.
