Shymkent arboretum is a favorite place to relax, to have a picnic outdoors and to have a fashion photo shoots in a lovestory style. The arboretum was founded in 1979. For the first time in the world, an experiment to transplant large trees in arid (desert) climate was conducted. The initiator of the appearance and development of this unique natural area in the hot corner was Asanbai Askarov, a politician and patriot of the city.
Shymkent arboretum was laid out on the site of the former city dump (!!!), and during its heyday it occupied 151 hectares, with about 500 thousand trees and 1360 shrubs of rare and exotic species. Here, for example, for the first time in Kazakhstan, specialists managed to grow a tulip tree, native to North America. Global reconstruction of the park took place in 2008. Then irrigation system and the lake were restored, new species of trees and plants were planted , malls (including the alley for honeymooners), pavilions, bridges were built and all the favorite sculptural objects restored . The tracks for equestrian and cycling activities were laid.
Since then the arboretum has become a special place for newlyweds and lovers who have started a new tradition here. As a sign of love and devotion to each other young people fix locks with their names on the bridge. There is a beautiful waterfall 142 meters high “The kingdom of love” that immediately became a part of yet another tradition – they make a wish under the waterfall.
The latest news: The arboretum in Shymkent has new settlers – squirrels, roe deer, spotted deer and peacocks. You can also see a lot of carp fry, geese, ducks and swans on the lake.

It is not a pastime per say but its hard to imagine Shymkent residents without a trait of a businessman . For its colors markets of Shymkent are direct continuation of the eastern markets of the Great Silk Road. The most known for its historical past is so-called Upper Market, which is located in the center of the old town. As expected, the shelves are crammed with a range of products . You can enjoy abundance of colors, flavors and pleasing to the ears hum among shoppers.
However, the realities of modern times are as follows: you can visit the historic Upper market only over the next few months. In 2017 all the existing markets will be closed, and will be replaced by a single one. A design competition for the development of the “Eastern Bazaar” was announced last year and it promises to turn it into a significant landmark in the sunny city of Kazakhstan.
